Musée des Confluences

An innovative and contemporary cultural establishment, the Musée des Confluences opened its doors to the general public on the 20th of December.

A remarkable architectural structure on the outskirts of Lyon, the museum will be a lively, interactive space, resembling a cabinet of curiosities, but on a much larger scale. The museum will also serve as an amazing venue for BtoB events

An imposing architectural creation

The job of designing the  Musée des Confluences was assigned to Austrian firm CoopHimmelb(l)au. Mineral and aerial aspects – a closer look at a multifaceted building.

By Wolf D. Prix and Partner

Tell us about the architectural style chosen for the building, which is a striking symbol standing on the edge of Lyon?

The architecture of the Musée des Confluences in Lyon, which comprises a glass Crystal and a stainless steel Cloud reflects the convergence of two rivers: the Rhône and the Saône. The Crystal plays the role of an urban square: an area brightly lit by daylight that receives visitors and prepares them for the museum visit. The Cloud, which contains the exhibitions, resembles a large space craft, moored temporarily to the “here and now”. Beneath the building, a large, open exhibition area extends from the museum entrance all the way to the park to arouse the curiosity of visitors. It offers unprecedented viewpoints, with a landscape of ramps and inclined surfaces.

Visitors are offered a fantastic new architectural experience, with a blurring of the lines between indoors and outdoors.

What were the watchwords for the design of indoor spaces?

In the Musée des Confluences, the conjunction of the present and the future, of the known and the unknown, is materialised through the arrangement of spaces that arouse the curiosity of visitors. The museum is a place to learn and have fun, rather than simply a collection of objects: it offers areas promoting both knowledge and leisure.

These two uses are reflected in the structure, which alternates between indoor exhibition rooms and open exhibition areas that extend across several floors. .

The museum as an event venue

Right from the design stage, the Musée des Confluences  was conceived of as a place that would welcome visitors of all kinds, in particular corporate and professional visitors.

Dedicated multi-purpose areas enable the hosting of seminars, conventions and evening events in a highly original architectural and cultural environment, where practical logistical aspects and museographical innovations are combined.

Two auditoriums, which can seat 300 and 118 people respectively, can be used independently or together thanks to a broadcast system.

Four breakout rooms complete the meeting/ seminar facilities.

On the third floor, which provides private access to the terrace on the fourth floor, a room measuring nearly 350 sq. m enables whole-day events to be hosted, from workshops to gala dinners and conference lunches.

Lastly, the cornerstone of the museum’s event offering, the 1200 sq. m Crystal has capacity for up to 600 people for a cocktail party beneath the stars. Note that participants of events held at the Musée des Confluences are entitled to an entrance ticket to visit the entire museum, on the day of the event itself or later if the schedule does not allow. In today’s online society, you can rely on new media outlets to discover the first events hosted as of January 2015!
